14. A Park for the People

Kallang Park was built just after Singaporeans gained full internal self-government from the British, and it witnessed a nation's journey to independence. The park was completed with the help of volunteer labour, embodying the spirit of Gotong Royong (Malay for "Mutual Self-Help"), and it opened on 18 October 1959 to great fanfare.

You may refer to pages 13 - 15, 22, 45 and 78 of the Guide Book for more information.
