11. Bridging the Merdeka Dream

Singapore's path towards Merdeka (Malay for independence) was a turbulent journey. In 1956, Chief Minister David Marshall held the Merdeka Rally to show British representatives that the people were ready for independence. However, riots and chaos soon broke out. This did not dampen our dreams, and independence was finally achieved in 1965. The Nicoll Highway and the Merdeka Bridge are lasting monuments that reflect the struggle our Pioneer Generation endured.
