17. Showtime in Kallang

Singapore's first Yang di-Pertuan Negara, Yusof Ishak, unveiled plans for the first National Theatre at Kallang. It was eventually built at Fort Canning Park. Kallang Theatre is the successor to Fort Canning's National Theatre. Marker 17, Showtime in Kallang, reveals the link, and explains why the National Theatre had to move to Kallang.

Yusof Ishak was a firm supporter of local sports - after Singapore defeated Perak 2-0 in the 1960 Malaya (now Malaysia) Cup Final, players and officials were invited to tea at the Istana, where they showed him their hard-won trophy.

The National Theatre (circled red) was located at the foot of Fort Canning Hill. This map was printed in 1984, just two years before it was demolished.
