12. When Kallang was Gay

Kallang stood out as a place of recreation for the masses through attractions such as the famous Happy World (also known as Gay World). It was a magical place which had entertainment choices for people from all walks of life. Have a closer look in this reproduced image of Happy World - check out the boxing poster (left) and cinema posters (right). The stadium was a well-known venue for boxing matches. There is even a hint that this photograph was taken before independence.

You may refer to pages 25 - 26, 40 of the Guide Book for more information.

(Right) As of 2018, the site of the former Happy World was an open field. For both maps, the red triangles mark the boundaries of Happy World. The blue dots mark where you are standing, a short distance north of the National Stadium.
